- adding user-generated gaming characters with Electronic Arts
- automatic uploading and viewing lectures at University of California
- making professional music videos with Animoto
- watching YouTube viewers on the television set with Tivo

Viacom dissed in YouTube lawsuit

by Karen M Cheung
LawsuitThe U.S. District Court recently denied punitive damages to Viacom after the company sued Google-owned YouTube for $1 billion for claims of massive intentional copyright infringement in March 2007. The statutory penalty can be as much $150,000 for each violation, according the Silicon Alley Insider. Had it been proven, that $1 billion amount would be about right, considering the 160,000 violations Viacom cited. The lawsuit is scheduled to continue throughout the year.

DivX gives LiveUniverse cold shoulder, won't sell

by Karen M Cheung
Stage6LiveUniverse Inc., led by MySpace founder Brad Greenspan, is trying to merge with DivX’s now defunct Stage6 video sharing site. The company press release, which sounds more like a blog vent by a disgruntled ex, explains that LiveUniverse was brutally rebuffed by DivX when it made an initial offer last month. Instead of selling, DivX elected to shut down Stage6. LiveUniverse is now making an offer of $11 million and equity to acquire Stage6 and its assets.

LiveUniverse most recently gobbled up video sharing site Revver last month for a paltry $5 million. If DivX went for the deal, Stage6 would use Revver’s Wrapper technology to track and share revenue, along with LiveUniverse’s Live Video technology to build its community. LiveUniverse is currently asking DivX shareholders to persuade the company to take the deal.

by Karen M Cheung
YouTubeSilicon Alley Insider is reporting that there are rumors surrounding Google’s YouTube. A new “white label” video hosting site would allow users to upload to other sites, in what sounds like an integration of platforms. There aren’t many details, but we do expect YouTube to launch plenty of new exciting features in the coming year including video analytics and live video, the company announced this month.
