Doctors remunerate patients for posting their surgery on YouTube

Posted by Joseph Devlin

I keep on ranting that more businesses need to start using services like YouTube as a promotional  medium.  Up to this date, my favorite example had been Blendec. Move over blenders chewing up iPhones!  Home movies of surgery have arrived!

A  great New York Times article talks about doctors who are offering discounts to patients willing to post video of their surgical procedures on YouTube, Facebook and the like.

"Doctors stress that their videos educate, not only promote, their trade. That distinction allows them to meet the bar of sites like YouTube, where the policy states that people can “upload health-related, educational, scientific and documentary footage — even when it involves graphic content.”

The photo I am posting on the right comes from a YouTube video of Dave Gibson's Lazek surgery. Dave is an actor living in New York who jumped at the chance to star in (and narrate) his own surgical video.  He got a discount and a little more screen time. Lends new meaning to the phrase, "Director, I'm ready for my close-up".
