Why can't I burn a DVD using Windows DVD Maker? PLEASE HELP!

I just found out that the Windows Movie Maker on Vista has a feature called Windows DVD Maker. Its pretty cool cause you can customize and make your own menus, add music etc... but when I click on "Burn Disc" a box pops up and says, "A DVD Burner was not found. Make sure a DVD burner is connected and installed, and then try again."

Its weird cause I have a new computer and I'm pretty sure theres a DVD Burner on here... like 99.9% sure. On my disc tray it says DVD Multi Recorder and DVD Rewritable... and I can play DVD's on here. So whats the deal?

I do not use those burning software, designed to work only with restricted, programmed applications.

I recommend excellent freeware ImageBurn:

http://www.imgburn.com/

It has many capability from CD/DVD/Blue-Ray burning to creating iso/bin-cue, along with double layer DVD ability.

Thanks guys, but I found out my DVD burner only works with DVD-RW and CD-RW discs. I have DVD-R and CD-R. I had the same problem while trying to burn music. I tried putting in my old DVD burner (which works with DVD-R and CD-R) into my new computer, but theres no way to remove the one thats in there, and even if I could take it out the plug in thingys aren't compatable with my old one. They don't fit.

I don’t understand what you mean by DVD-R doesn’t fit the burner/player. The DVDs whether +/-R/RW/RAM come in standard sizes either 8cm or 12cm.

If yours is a multi media optical drive then it should be able to handle all DVD media. If you get freezing drive and unable to remove the media, there are other issues probably going on. Software incompatibility, bad media, hardware resource are problems will cause freezing, just to name a few.

It is possible that you did not create a compliant, burnable video project. In Vista did you click “Publish to DVD”? That will create menu and encode video to burn to a medium.

I agree with kshrine in that there is something else going on here. I've yet to hear of a DVD burner that REQUIRED you to use DVD (plus or minus) RW. The W only means it's rewritable whereas DVD-Rs/DVD+Rs can only be written to/finalized once. If it writes to DVD-RWs, it should write to "virgin" DVD-Rs. Sometimes there can be issues with brands. Some burners like some brands better than others. The best brand is Taiyo Yuden. That's the only brand I buy. Get them online, on sale & in bulk & they are ~50 cents to a dollar per DVD. But honestly, there's not going to be a burner that requires you to use a rewritable DVD. If it writes to DVD-RW, it will write to a DVD-R.

I'm still pretty confused here. I tried the link that acgold gave me but it didn't fix my problem. So I figure maybe Windows DVD Maker is just a crappy DVD making program. So I tried the one in kshrine's link... with that it will act like its burning to the discs, but when I insert the disc into my DVD player it won't play. I guess I'll just keep trying different things. Maybe it has something to do with rebooting my computer recently... but I reinstalled everything.

Also, whats the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

I believe the reason why you’re finding difficulty to play those DVD is that created DVDs are not DVD compliant; the file needs to in DVD structure, not just raw video. The DVD file needs to have VIDEO_TS and its substructure as VOB, IFO, and BUP. The video output you’re trying to burn is probably just a video data. That is why it’s only viewable in RW.

In WMM, once you created an edited video, that is playable, you need to click Publish to DVD, which will guide you through the steps. You must remember that in order to play DVD in DVD stand alone player, it must be authored correctly in the way as I described in the first paragraph.

Today -/+R difference is not that significant, now almost all DVD players play both formats. (See my link above.)

Thanks for the help guys. Another reason I think my burner may only burn with DVD-RW is cause under "My Computer" it says DVD RW Drive. I know it sounds weird and you guys haven't heard of this kinda thing before... but hey maybe I just have an unussual computer. I mean its brand new.

Davy,

I don’t know which PC you have Vista OS loaded. PC will read the media that you insert into your optical multi drive and give you the information in your Computer. If you insert -/+CD/RW -/+DVD R/RW ROM or RAM that is what’s being reported back to you. I don’t believe the your drive name is called DVD RW. Try reading Computer information without any media inserted.

I am not familiar with these computer DVD burning programs but with my stand alone DVD burners I must "Finalize" a DVD after it is burned, before it will play in a DVD player. Are you sure your computer DVD recording software is finalizing your DVD's? The "Finalizing" step writes an index on the DVD which DVD players must read before they can play the DVD.

Not to be a stickler, but yeah...when you're trying to resolve an issue, you need to be clear on terminology. IE, the above statement...simply rebooting your computer would never require you to reinstall anything. Perhaps you misspoke. But you do need to make sure you're using correct terminology when telling us what you've done.

Did you confirm your DVD has the folders & files kshrine mentioned?

Absolutely not. No way is there going to be a DVD burner that requires you to use DVD (plus/minus) RWs. If it writes to a DVD-RW, it will write to a DVD-R.
